Green Comet 2023

It hasn’t happened in the last 50,000 years, but a dazzling ice-green comet is about to make history by passing within a few million kilometers of our planet’s atmosphere for the first time. One of the NASA experts said that the green comet was discovered for the first time in March of 2022 when Jupiter was still in orbit. On February 2nd, 2023, the brilliant green comet is predicted to make its closest approach to Earth, making it one of the most accessible celestial objects to identify.

According to a site maintained by NASA, comets are infamous for their shortage of predictability. Additionally, one can find them if one follows the comet’s present pattern in brightness. The website also mentioned the possibility that the comet on January 12th will be visible through the naked eye or even with a pair of binoculars in areas with clear skies.

Green Comet Date & Time 2023

Early in February 2023, skywatchers in the Southern Hemisphere can see the comet for the first time. The new moon phase, which occurs on January 21st and occurs when the moon is fully unilluminated, should give the optimum dark skies necessary to identify C/2022 E3 (ZTF), provided that the weather cooperates.

The most exciting part of this astronomical event is that the comet will be visible with the unaided human eye. Comet C/2022 E3 (ZTF) will become visible to the naked eye during the last week of January or the first week of February. Visit the Indira Gandhi Planetarium in Lucknow to get a better and clearer night sky view.

The personnel there is happy to help fans by supplying them with binoculars and a telescope, provided that the weather does not interfere with the view. According to astronomers’ findings, the comet can be seen most clearly in the sky to the northeast just before sunrise. This month, Lucknow is preparing for a spectacular astronomical event: the Green Comet, last seen nearly 50,000 years ago in the Stone Age, will be visible to the human eye for the first time in almost 5,000 years.

Green Comet Live Online Streaming

A live stream of the comet’s perihelion will get broadcasted by the VTP, a service delivered by the Bellatrix Astronomical Observatory in Ceccano, Italy. The Bellatrix Astronomical Observatory maintains and gives access to remotely controlled telescopes, and the VTP is one of the services it offers.

It would be on Thursday at midnight Eastern Time, which would be eight o’clock in the evening Pacific Time. The most recent components of the orbit suggest that the comet follows a parabolic path with an eccentricity of 1.00027, as shown by those elements. Because such an orbit is not closed, the C/2022 E3 spacecraft will exit the solar system after completing one revolution around the star and will never come back. According to the information on the website, this will be the last time the comet will be in its closest proximity to the Earth.

About The Comet

As informed by NASA, the green comet got the scientific designation of C/2022 E3 (ZTF). The comet would get the closest it could go to the Sun on Thursday. After some time has passed, on February 2nd, it will start its path to Earth. At this point, the comet would be around 42 million kilometers from the surface of Earth. Given that this occurrence won’t ever again in anyone’s lifetime, it is not surprising that people see it as a fantastic opportunity. Because a comet’s orbit close to the Sun takes about 50,000 years to complete.

Comets are just balls of filthy ice. Mineral grains, carbon dioxide, and dry ice are available in this category. The majority of comets consist of two separate tails. The ion tail is an example of one of them. The hue of its tail is somewhat yellowish. The second one is a dust tail, on the other hand. The shade of this one is bluish grey. It is essential to consider that comet tails usually point away from the Sun.

    • Yes, the comet will be visible from OK, provided you are not located in a major city like Oklahoma City, or Tulsa for example, for the comet itself will just barely become visible to the unaided eye, but a pair of binoculars will make it easily visible. as for the location, the comet will be visible in the northern part of the sky ( toward the direction of Kansas), near the Little Dipper ( Ursa Minor, the little bear). The comet will be visible all night long for it doesn't set at all as seen from Oklahoma. For best results choose a night that is very clear to attempt to spot the comet. On the 1st and 2nd of February the waxing gibbous moon will make it a bit more difficult to spot the comet due to scattered moonlight. You need to familiarize yourself with the stars and constellations and where they are located for this will help you to find stuff easier for they will aid you in navigating around the sky. Clear skies, and wish you luck in spotting the comet.

    • Have you seen a solar eclipse? I live near New Orleans and traveled to Western Kentucky for the last eclipse. There is another one in April of next year. I’ll be seeing that one in Southwest Arkansas. I’m only in my 50’s, but every time I do anything I wonder if it will be the last time. I’ve lost most of my immediate family in the past few years so I’ve become a bit morbid.

  4. being a professional night time photographer mainly…im trying to prepare myself for this once in a lifetime event.

I live in Southeastern Massachusetts. Plan on going to an extremely dark area on Cape Cod . what I'm looking for. weather permitting..what dates will it be closest to earth….will it be visible to the naked eye..what time of night best to view…and where in the sky would I look?

    • Hi Rick, We thought the beach would be best too. Went to Salisbury Beach and saw it (we think) in the N-NW sky last night, Feb 1. We were also thinking of heading to Cape Cod but saw the chance of clouds, whereas no clouds in last night's forecast farther north. Also, we liked the dark night sky, lack of tall trees and the lay of the land up that way. We searched for it while at Lake Winnipesaukee on 1/25, but too hilly and full of trees, although if you could climb up the Morse preserve, I think it would be perfect. Good luck!
