About Kedarnath Temple

At 3,584 meters above sea level, the Kedarnath temple is in the town of Kedarnath on the banks of the Mandakini river. Hindu mythology claims that the Pandavas constructed the Kedarnath temple after discovering Shiva’s bull’s tail there. Chota Char Dham, often known as “the tiny circuit of four seats,” includes the shrine at Kedarnath in addition to Yamunotri, Gangotri, and Badrinath.

The Kedarnath Temple is the tallest of the twelve Jyotirlingas and the closest to Mount Kailash, Lord Shiva’s everlasting home. The temple is inaccessible by road. Therefore visitors must hike 22 kilometers upwards from Gaurikund to reach it. The temple offers pony and machan rides for those who need an alternative mode of transportation. The temple closes to the public until the end of the year (Kartik Purnima). During November and April (or May), devotees bring a statue of Lord Shiva from Kedarnath to Ukhimath.

When To Visit Kedarnath?

Throughout the winter, Kedarnath receives a lot of snow, which makes the temple’s access even more challenging. As a result, the temple becomes inaccessible to devotees from November through April. Uttarakhand Char Dham Devasthanam Management Board sets a good time each year, usually the first week of November, for the symbolic figure of Lord Shiva to get brought down from Kedarnath temple to Ukhimath.

The statue is moved from Ukhimath to Kedarnath on a day designated as promising in the first week of May. The ideal time to visit Kedarnath is between May through November. The board determines and announces the dates on which the temples in Chota Char Dham, including Kedarnath, will open and close for Kedarnath Yatra 2023.
