If you know how international soccer works, you know how it works in the group stage: Each team plays the other three at home and on the road for a total of six group games. Points were awarded for a win, a draw, and a loss (one for a tie, three for a win).
Each team was ranked according to its point total within its group. In a tie between two or more teams, the first tiebreakers are the following:
- Points in tied matches
- Goal difference in tied matches
- Goals scored in tied matches
