Jignesh Mevani MLA Arrested
Jignesh Mevani, an Independent MLA from Gujarat’s Vadagam constituency who is also a Dalit leader, was arrested by the Assam police on Wednesday night and transferred to the state of Assam the following day.
BJP leader Amit Shah filed a complaint against the 41-year-old lawyer-turned-politician, alleging that his tweets about Prime Minister Narendra Modi were defamatory. The lawyer-turned-politician, who has ties but no formal links to the Congress, was arrested. Mevani was taken into custody from a Circuit House in Palampur, Gujarat, at approximately 11:30 p.m.
Arup Kumar Dey, a BJP leader from Assam’s Kokrajhar district, filed a complaint against Mevani on his behalf. Criminal conspiracy, promoting enmity between communities, causing intentional insult to provoke breach of peace, and violations of the Information Technology Act are listed in the First Information Report (FIR).
Jignesh Mevani MLA Arrested by Police
According to the news agencies, Gujarat MLA Jignesh Mevani was apprehended by the Assam Police in the state’s Palanpur area late on April 20 night, according to the Gujarat government.
Mevani, who expressed support for the Congress last year, was picked up from a Circuit House and taken to Ahmedabad; he will be taken to Ahmedabad today as part of the ongoing investigation.
The police have not yet disclosed the reason for his detention. Some of his most recent tweets, on the other hand, had been withheld. According to a tweet, his arrest has been attributed to a complaint about his tweets criticizing Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
The news agency said Mevani was apprehended from the Palanpur Circuit House last night, citing Kokrajhar SP Thube Prateek Vijay Kumar as the source. “We have not yet received a copy of the police report. We have been informed about some cases filed against him in Assam, which appears to be the case in the first instance, “Mevani’s team posted a message on Instagram.
Jignesh Mevani MLA Reason
In a series of tweets, Mevani, a Dalit leader and convenor of the political party Rashtriya Dalit Adhikar Manch, claimed that Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who “considers Godse to be God,” should appeal for peace and harmony in the face of communal clashes in Gujarat. Mevani was arrested and charged with sedition. According to his Twitter account, some of his recent tweets have been withheld by authorities.
An investigation has been launched against Mevani under the provisions of Section 120B (criminal conspiracy), Section 153(A) (promoting hatred between two communities), Sections 295(A), 504 (intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of peace), and other sections of the Information Technology Act, according to police.
Jignesh Mevani MLA Charges
By a document shared by officials of the Assam Police, an FIR has been lodged in connection with a tweet posted by (Jignesh) Mevani a few days earlier. Twitter, on the other hand, has decided to withhold the tweet. It had something to do with Nathuram Godse. Mevani was first transported by road to Ahmedabad and then by air to Assam early this morning,” Mr. Jat told the Press Trust of India.
Jignesh Mevani represents the Vadgam constituency in Gujarat. His political independence makes him an independent MLA, but he has extended his support to Congress. He and Kanhaiya Kumar, a political activist and former president of the JNU students’ union, attended a press conference with Congress leader Rahul Gandhi. Kumar announced his decision to join the party, and Mevani expressed his support for Gandhi.
Because several young leaders, such as Jyotiraditya Scindia, Sushmita Dev, Jitin Prasad, Priyanka Chaturvedi, and Laliteshpati Tripathi, had left the party in the last two years, the Congress hoped that the entry of Kanhaiya and Mevani would be positive optics for the party.
