Even though it’s been a while since the first movie came out, its popularity inevitably begets sequels, and we’re getting a lot of them. The still-untitled Avatar 2 is the first of four planned sequels. It was initially for release in 2014. We haven’t heard much lately, but Cameron just confirmed that the first sequel is finished and that the third is also well along – we even recently received a new set shot showcasing a massive yacht dubbed The Matador, more on that below.
Avatar 2
James Cameron, the great director, helmed Avatar in 2009, which smashed box office records. Following the tremendous success of the science-fiction picture Avatar, filmmaker James planned to release Avatar 2 in 2014 due to a technical issue for underwater sequences, considerable delays in scripting, pre-production, and visual effects occurred. So far, the sequel is to be published on December 16, 2023, with the following three sequels following on December 20, 2024, December 18, 2026, and December 22, 2028.
Avatar 2 was initially scheduled to launch in December 2022; owing to the continuing epidemic; it was pushed back to December 2023. The shooting took place over three years, from 2017 to 2020, combining live-action footage and cutting-edge CGI effects.
Avatar 2 Release Date
For a moment, it looked as if Avatar 2 might be released this year; the picture was forced to be postponed (again) owing to the coronavirus epidemic, with Disney shifting the release date back to December 17, 2022. Disney has now moved the release date out to December 2023. After filmmaker James Cameron confirmed that Avatar 2 has ended, the picture seems to be on pace to debut in 2023.
In an interview with Cinema Blend, the filmmaker stated: “So, right now, I’m filming in New Zealand. We’re down to around 10% of the way. The rest of the live-action is now being shot. On Avatar 2, we’re finished, and on Avatar 3, we’re around 95% finished.” After the first Avatar sequel is completed, fans won’t have to wait long for further adventures on Pandora since Avatar 3 will be released on December 22, 2024, only two years later.
“The day we release Avatar 2, we’ll simply start working on finalizing Avatar 3,” Cameron continued. Do not be too optimistic. However, Avatar 2 was initially intended for release in 2014, so you can see how unreliable these official dates have been in the past. The next installment will have a three-year gap, with Avatar 4 set to release on December 19, 2026, and Avatar 5 on December 17, 2028.
Avatar 2 Cast
The first film’s key actors, including Zoe Saldana, Sigourney Weaver, and Sam Worthington, are all signed to long-term deals, so they’ll be back for the sequels. Stephen Lang, who portrayed Colonel Miles Quaritch in the original film, is also back. Given that he did not make it out of the movie alive, it’s unclear how the character will return, but I suppose we’ll have to wait and see.
Actor | Character |
Sam Worthington | Jake Sully |
Zoe Saldana | Neytiri |
CCH Pounder | Mo’at |
Cliff Curtis | Tonowari |
Jamie Flatters | Neteyam |
Trinity Bliss | Jake and Neytiri’s Daughter |
Kate Winslet | Ronal |
Kate Winslet is reunited with filmmaker James Cameron after their legendary tragedy Titanic. At the same time, Edie Falco from Nurse Jackie, Michelle Yeoh from Star Trek: Discovery, and Cliff Curtis from The Walking Dead have all landed parts. Oona Chaplin (Charlie’s granddaughter) is also expected to feature in Avatar 2 and 3, while Vin Diesel (Fast & Furious) has confirmed his participation in the subsequent sequels.
Avatar 2 Plot
Avatar 2 will concentrate more on Jake and Neytiri’s offspring, who have now taken over as the clan’s leaders. Many regions of the new Pandora were hinted at after the first film when Jake rallied the tribes against the humans with enormous new plans and seas and a beautiful green moon. According to Producer Jon Mandau, the tale will have a stronger focus on Pandora’s future generation. “I believe the strength of Avatar 2’s story is what Jim does in all of his films: he puts in universal themes that transcend genres. And, when you consider it, there is no more universal topic than family. The Sully family is at the heart of each of our sequels. What are the dynamics that parents go through to safeguard their children?”
Avatar 2 Expected Budget
According to Deadline, Avatar 2 cost $250 million, and the total budget for all four sequels is anticipated to be $1 billion. Consequently, it’s a costly film to make. Avatar 2 will surely be no different, with Cameron undoubtedly generating sights, unlike anything we’ve seen before on screen. We can see a guy in underwater CGI gear riding what seems to be some type of sea-dwelling monster in the Instagram photo above, thanks to producer Jon Plandau.
